The Madrone copper top patina table

May 8th, 2010

The copper top table is now just about finished. The copper patina didn't come out quite as I expected, but it was close. A little light sanding on the patina brought out the etching that the acids had done on the copper. It created an interesting texture. See the April 11th post below to see how we got here.

Copper top table patina

April 11, 2010

We have a copper top table that is in progress in our Portland shop. Here are a few shop notes for those of you interested in the process of what goes on in the wood shop. The copper is going to receive a patina. The first step was to experiment with small pieces of copper to see what kind of patina could be achieved. The basic patina chemicals are vinegar and salt, mixed in a bucket with saw dust. The wet mixture is placed on the copper, and left to sit in a closed environment for 3 weeks. In three weeks time I will show you how the top turned out.

Wings Desk

The Wings desk was a custom project for a customer looking for a computer workstation desk that measured 10 feet by 2 feet. The wood for the top was the same as what we use for the Amsterdam table - salvaged Douglas Fir, but with a light color that has a fresh modern look. The trim was made from some gnarly old barn wood. I originally named this desk the Cove Desk. The idea was to create an experience of a sheltered space to work. The sides and back elevate slightly to give a feeling of personal space.

Wine Country Table

Wine Country Table

A table top style that connects with Oregon's past and present. The subtle grooves in the grain create a unique tactile and visual experience.

Most of what you see on this page was made with reclaimed wood from Oregon's decommissioned buildings. This wood is not FSC certified, but if you saw our wood pile, you would agree that our wood source does not get any more sustainable - as long as we can find it...
